August 2009 - Together at Last: Four
Heads (two human and two cat) under one roof in Tujunga
Right around the15th of the month Virginia
made the preliminary move to Tujunga. The
dishes,
books, winter clothes, etc, etc, were to come
in a series of smaller moves in the
remaining August weekends. Thanks to
friends Drew and Al for helping with the U-Haul,
the washer, dryer and other assorted items
we took care of on one of those
weekends.
Marbles and Me
John Grogan and his family certainly had
life turned upside down - as described in
his book "Marley and Me" - about the
steamroller of a Labrador who's constant
trouble making made for a great read.
Oh how we can relate - looking in on the
dog world from our cat world.
Virginia and I could easily write a sequel
called Marbles and Me.
Marbles is one mischievous cat, who
(so far) is refusing to get along with our
other cat, us or guests
that visit for birthday parties (Sorry
Tommy!!).
Older, mellower, and about 10 lbs lighter,
Tappancs is the recipient of Marbles
fighting, chasing, hissing and cat bullying.
Before
moving in together, our thoughts about the
cats was certainly naive - "Oh the two cats
will get along just fine...".
If we could have foreseen our new routines
of cat-separation each morning and evening:
The carefully choreographed "switching" of
cats between rooms, the doubled up baby
gates, and constant "lock and load" of the
water spray bottle at hand - would we have
even given it a try? Too late now. All we
can hope for is for a feline peace treaty to
come soon as the security forces grow more
weary.
August 26th - The Station Fire
This was the largest, closest, most frightening
fire I've experienced to date. Horrible as
it was, in addition we suffered 100 degree
temps, soot, ash and smoke filled air for over a
week.
Each evening - we took to the trails to get a better
look. You can
see what things looked like from our perspective
in Tujunga.
According to Wikipedia.org:
160,557 acres burned
89 homes burned to the ground
2 Firefighters Killed
Cause has been determined to be arson
Some time around Sept 7th things broke. The
winds shifted, the air cleared and cooled and
things got better very quickly. The fire
burned on in some very remote parts of the
Angeles National Forest, but we could breath
easy.
