November 2007 - Thanksgiving Spirits

Two seemingly unrelated horse events came together on Thanksgiving weekend.  In thinking about it later, its odd - or even magical how events get bundled together sometimes.

Allie was Virginia's oldest horse that lived at a picturesque ranch north of Los Angeles.  After the last few visits to the ranch (and meeting with the veterinarian), Virginia knew that Allie's days were coming to a close.  She was an old horse, loosing strength and getting thin.  Weeks turned to months, yet Allie hung on.

KK is Virginia's younger horse.  KK is loved and adored by my very special god daughter Danielle - and for many months had been trying to schedule a day for her to come to the stable for a ride with Virginia.  Summer turned to Autumn, but finally an open day for our ride was planned on Thanksgiving weekend.

Just two days preceding our anticipated ride - on Thanksgiving - Virginia got a the call from the ranch.  Allie had passed away during the night.   We cancelled our plans for the day, drove up to the ranch so Virginia could say goodbye to her old friend. It was a somber day.  But cutting through the grief was our fantastic day with Danielle and KK. (See video below.)

This video is dedicated to Danielle. It features Danielle, KK and Virginia having a blast together.  It has a purple control bar and has music by Green Day (one of Danielle's favorite bands).  It's titled KK and Me and runs just under 2 minutes.

Hey Danielle, I hope you like it!

From Virginia:  Farewell Allie
Allie looked a lot like KK but she was taller and bigger overall.  She was a sweet, gentle horse. I would ride her often on the trails in Griffith Park with my sister and friends. We had some great times together.

Allie had a wonderful and comfortable trot which many horses don't have. She loved to jump every stream which was exhilarating.

The one thing I remember most is that when I stood at the pasture gate and called her name she would always come over to me. It was sweet. There will always be special place in my heart for her.

Turkey Dinner
On a lighter note,  we did get to have a really nice Thanksgiving dinner with Virginia's family.   On the evening of "Black Friday" , we gathered at Lizzy & Chris's home for a traditional meal, celebrations and fun.
