August 1st 2006 - Three New Florence Lake Fans

Florence Lake is located deep in the Sierra's and is accessible via the famous Kaiser Pass road.  This single lane road provides drivers and passengers alike with awesome scenery as well as horrifying near misses as opposing vehicles inch by each other -  trying to get by with out going over the edge.  No guard-rails here!

Once lakeside Dick, Chuck and I loaded our back country packs on the Florence Lake ferry for the 5 mile putt across to the trail head on the far side of the lake.  We were headed to make camp along the San Juaquin river.  The highly desirable Blaney Meadow hot springs lay across the river and would require a wild and wet - if not slightly dangerous crossing.  We had a great time, and the guys caught lots of fish.   I really enjoyed this trip - especially exploring a part of the Sierra range I've never been before.

Thanks to Chuck for providing many of the pictures.

August 10th 2006 - A Night at the Bowl

It had been many years since I'd been to "The Bowl" but thanks to our friend Lyz, Virginia and I had such a pleasant evening at the Hollywood Bowl enjoying the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

She was nice enough to share her boss's box seats, new Lexus and VIP parking to boot!  (Boss was away on vacation...).  We wined and dined in our primo box seats and really had a nice time.  Thanks Lyz!!!

August 28th 2006  - Back from Mineral King in Sequoia National Park.

Virginia and I spent 5 days in the Mineral King area of Sequoia National Park. This was a new area for both of us and we had a blast exploring it's high elevation lakes, trails, meadows and wildlife.

We stayed at Cold Springs Campground  - and scored a site right on the creek.

We spent the days hiking the steep and strenuous trails, high into the alpine tundra.  Nights were spent 'round the campfire while cooking, stargazing and listening to the continuous rush of Mineral Creek just past our picnic table.  While Los Angeles was still the last grips of a wicked heat-wave, the high elevation provided nippy mornings and cool afternoon breezes.  So nice!

I'd like you to take a few moments to read an announcement from my brother Jeff.

He's participating in the "Reach the Beach" relay which raises money for many charities.

Jeff and his team will give their donations to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston Massachusetts.
