Virginia and I took a trip to Thomas A. Edison Lake the last
week of August. This lake is located at the end of the
infamous Kaiser Pass Road - which I mentioned in my
entry for August 2006
regarding Florence Lake. Edison Lake is at the
very end of the road - along with the
Vermillion Valley Resort - which is really in the
middle of the wilderness. Hikers use the resort as
a launching point for back country trips as well as a
place to camp, fish, boat etc...
I wouldn't let
the word 'Resort' fool you. This place has lots of dirt
and sawdust as well as oddities such as an outdoor
washing machine (and dryer), funny dogs that follow you
about - but we found it charming indeed.
Our trip consisted of 4 days in the back country -
about 4 miles past the inner reaches of the lake.
This area is know as "The Mono Recesses". Some of
the Sierra guide books describe this as one of the most
beautiful areas of the High Sierra.
It certainly lived up to this description.
Additionally - after returning to Edison Lake, we did a
traditional (4 day) car camp at the Vermillion campground.
In the video you'll see a round shelter called a "Yurt".
My (car camping) tent completely disintegrated during a
24hr downpour. We had enough - trying to soak up
the water on our tent floor, so we rented this lovely
Yurt for the night. The next day, the rain
passed and our tent was able to dry out.
